AMA does not consider AI software to be authors of content generated by it. Therefore, AI tools should not be listed in the reference list. Instead, acknowledge the use of AI tools in the text, typically in the methods or acknowledgements section. Include the AI tool's name, version, manufacturer, and the date it was used.
Current SOM Best Practice
It is currently best practice for authors/students to disclose in their submitted work if AI technologies were used to create, review, revise, or edit any of the content. The student should describe in either the methods section or in a separate disclosure section how AI was used. This is the expectation of SOM students when submitting written assignments, to include Learning Issues, presentations, literature reviews, short answer reflections, and other written assignments. When in doubt, asking the course director is the correct course of action, and the onus is upon the student to do so.
How to acknowledge AI use in AMA style:
1. In-text acknowledgement:
When you first mention the use of AI to create or edit content, include a brief acknowledgement in the text. Provide sufficient information about the AI tools and its usage to allow readers to understand its role in your work.
2. Specifics:
This should include the AI tool's brand name, version or extension number, manufacturer or owner, and the date(s) it was used.
Example: "On June 12, 2023, the original full text of the question was put into a fresh chatbot session (ChatGPT, model GPT-4, OpenAI) and the generated responses were saved."
3. Methods or Acknowledgements:
You can also include a more detailed description of how the AI was used in the methods or acknowledgements section.
