Security

Secure Your Phone

  • Set a passcode
  • Enable Auto-Lock
  • iOS: Auto-Lock is enabled by going to Settings>General>Auto-Lock
  • Android: Auto-Lock is enabled by going to Settings>My Device>Lock screen>Secured lock time>Instantly with the power key or when the screen times out. Then go to Settings>My Device> Display>Screen Timeout and choose how long you want the screen to stay open before it locks.
  • Install Updates Regularly
  • iOS: Go to Settings>iTunes & App Stores>Under Automatic Downloads slide the Updates to the right to turn on this feature.
  • Android: Go to the Google Play Store, tap the Menu button and go into Settings>Auto-update apps.
  • Securely configure Bluetooth and WiFi
  • Disable Location Services
    •    To disable location reporting or history in Android:
        1. Open Apps and go to Settings.
        2. Scroll down and tap Location.
        3. Scroll down and tap Google Location Settings.
        4. Tap Location Reporting and Location History, and switch the slider to off for each one.
        5. To delete your phone's location cache, tap "Delete Location History" at the bottom of the screen under Location History.
        6. Repeat this process for each Google Account you have on your Android device.

Google makes the process pretty easy and transparent. The downside is that apps like Google Maps and any other Google service that makes use of your location data either won't work, or they'll prompt you every time they want access to your position. If you enjoy location services but don't want everywhere you go dumped into this database, just disable Location History and leave Location Reporting enabled.

To disable location services in iOS:

          1. Open the Settings App.
          2. Scroll down to Privacy, and select Location Services.
          3. Disable all Location Services by swiping the slider at the top, or scroll down to disable location services for specific apps, including Google and Google Maps.
          4. Select System Services to deny location data from specific features, like location-based advertisements, turn off Frequent Locations, or disable the "Popular Near Me" feature.
      • Enable encryption
      • Avoid physical theft

What to do if a phone is lost or stolen:
      1. File a police report immediately.
      2. Report the loss as soon as possible to your cellular service provider.
      3. Have the phone number or account disabled so no further charges can be applied in case the service provider is unable to lock the handset (many US service providers won't disable your phone).
      4. If a phone was stolen that contained sensitive data -- even if it was encrypted or the phone was locked.
      5. If the phone was insured, contact the insurance agent. Note that theft of mobile devices is not covered.
