PBL Track - Rowan-Virtua SOM: Longitudinal Courses

A "one stop shop" to the PBL track pre-clerkship years at the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Longitudinal Courses

There are several courses that run longitudinally through both the pre-clerkship and clerkship years.  

OCS 1 and 2 focus on the skills and procedures students will need to learn to fully participate in the clinical setting.

The course focuses on the development of student's abilities in history taking, physical/structural exam, osteopathic manipulative treatment or OMM, and core procedures such as basic life support, IV placement, and point of care ultrasounds in the SIM lab.

These skills and abilities are synchronized with the sequence of the pre-clerkship system blocks and are taught over the two pre-clerkship years.

 

Medical Scholarship 1-4 teach the fundamentals of research in medicine.

Taking a didactic approach the course aims to teach students the essentials of evidence-based practice, quality improvement, biostatistics, epidemiology, research design and implementation, research communication, and scholarly presentation.

Working first in groups and then individually, student's learn how to best conduct medical research; learning how to research, analyze, and synthesize information.  The ultimate goal being to create a publishable end product.

CSLL helps to teach the core skills of leadership and service, ethics and professionalism.  The course can run 3 or 4 years depending on the student.

CSLL has 2 basic parts that will run longitudinally through years 1-3.:

1. Interactive Leadership Skills - guided analysis of most significant leadership qualities and skills.  Students practice and embed the leadership knowledge gained.

2. Community Service Learning (CSL) - students id, develop, and implement a health promotion project that addresses a community need.

The 4th year is voluntary and consists of an evaluation of the project implemented in Year 3.
