Welcome to CSLL - Community Service Learning & Leadership
The goal of CSLL is to expose students to the impact that primary care physicians should have in the delivery of comprehensive, continuous, community-oriented care for vulnerable patients in underserved areas. This course will help students gain a comprehensive understanding of the variety of psychosocial issues that can impact the delivery of this service. At its completion, students will have the self-awareness, knowledge, skills, and humility necessary to work with underserved populations.
CSLL is a project-based longitudinal course in the SOM curriculum.
Leadership

Communication Skills
Communication Skills are the abilities used when giving and receiving different kinds of information. Communication Skills involve listening, speaking, observing, and emphasizing. Great communicators choose their words well, understand their audience, and connect with them at the right time and place. Communication helps build relationships by allowing people to share their experiences and needs; it helps to build connection to others.

Cultural Competency & Cultural Humility
Cultural Competence can be loosely defined as the ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one's own. This implies, however, that once you have gained this understanding, that your work is done and there is nothing further to learn.
Cultural Humility involves an ongoing process of self-exploration and self-critique combined with a willingness to learn from others. It means entering a relationship with another person with the intention of honoring their beliefs, customs, and values. The emphasis here is that this is a life-long and continual process; you are never done learning about and trying to understand others.
