CSLL - Community Service Learning and Leadership: Social Determinants of Health

A guide to the longitudinal partnering with AHEC for students to work with the underserved populations and learn leadership skills while conducting a much needed community service.

Social Determinants of Health

Most health outcomes are determined by factors other than healthcare.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

According to Healthy People 2030 SDOH can be grouped into 5 domains: economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context.

Social constructs such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, and classism are also now recognized as SDOH.
