When EndNote is installed on a computer with Microsoft Word EndNote adds a new "tab" to Word that adds EndNote functionality. With this new EndNote tab you can insert properly formatted references from an EndNote library into a Word document and automatically creates bibliographies.
Position the cursor in the document where the citation needs to appear, go to your EndNote library and highlight the needed reference, return to the document and go to Insert Citation on the EndNote tab. Select Insert Selected Citation(s) to insert the reference that is currently highlighted in the EndNote library.
The citation is inserted into the document where you positioned the cursor. The reference is inserted into your document according to the rules of the particular style you have selected. (See Setting Publication Styles to learn how to change publication style.)
When you come to a place in the document where picture, chart, or graph is needed go to Insert Citation on the EndNote tab and select Insert Figure.
This will open a window where a keyword search for the figure can be done. Highlight the figure's reference and click Insert.
Where the figure or table is placed (in the text or at the end of the document) depends on what publication style you choose.
The final step that needs to be done before submitting a document is all references and graphics must be embedded into the Word document. If you save or email a document and then opened it on a different computers without taking this step none of the references and figures will in the document. References and figures from an EndNote library are only "linked" to a document until this step is taken.
In the Bibliography column on the EndNote tab in Word select Convert Citations and Bibliography and then select Convert to Plain Text.
A new unsaved copy of your document will be created with references and figures embedded into the Word document. You can save this new copy and attach it to an email or take it to a different computer and all the references and figures will be included. The "links" back to your EndNote library have been removed and EndNote will not track or edit any changes made to references in the new document. However, the original copy of your document still exists and changes can still make changes to it using EndNote. This step is the final step to take before submitting your document.
