Section description: This section will highlight important news or updates from the Rowan University Libraries or the Hope Brings Strength Health Sciences Library.

With preparations underway for the new 2025/2026 academic year, please remember to update the library on required and recommended books for your courses and blocks.

Read & Publish Agreements

Rowan University Libraries have entered into multiple  Read and Publish, also known as “Transformative (Open Access) Agreements,” with many top academic publishers.

What are Read and Publish (or Transformative) Agreements?

They are contracts between publishers and institutions (such as Rowan University Libraries) that allow authors to read and publish their work. Open Access fees are waived for eligible authors from the institution, allowing you to focus on research and writing.

What does this mean for you?

As a Rowan-affiliated author, you can now publish your research with an Open Access license without needing to pay an APC (article processing charge). Some of the publishers included are:

  • The American Chemical Society
  • BMJ
  • Company of Biologists
  • Elsevier
  • Institutes of Physics (IOP Publishing)
  • PLoS
  • Sage
  • Springer
  • Wiley
  • Hindawi

Each agreement has a specific list of journals it covers. Some agreements have an annual cap on the number of publications they cover, and some have specific steps that you, as an author, need to take to qualify. Other agreements only cover certain peer-reviewed studies/designs while excluding others, such as letters to the editor or correspondences.

The primary or submitting author must have a Rowan email address to submit through Rowan’s Read and Publish agreements. However, secondary authors do not need to have a Rowan email address.

The Read and Publish Agreements’ LibGuide navigates through each publisher agreement and the specific journals that are covered. Please take a moment to review the Guide and learn which journals are now available to you.

If you have further questions, please contact the Hope Brings Strength Health Sciences Library Director, Kevin Block, at kblock@rowan.edu.
